"Cheyenne Autumn" stars Ricardo Montalban and Gilbert Roland as leaders of a defiant band of Cheyenne plains Indians who leave the squalor of the Oklahoma reservation on which they have been placed to return to their native lands in Wyoming. They are pursued in a half-hearted manner by Richard Widmark, a U.S. Cavalry Officer who essentially agrees with their action. When the Indians are attacked and defend themselves the press characterizes their self-defense as a massacre of white soldiers, sparking a massive over-response by another Cavalry officer. This film was John Ford's last western and is said to be something of an apologia for the hundreds of exploitative pictures he made at the expense of the Indian people. 1964
