“There’s something haunting about this mood piece’s chilly atmosphere and alienated emotional landscape…leaves a few resonant echoes in its wake.”
—Trevor Willsmer, Movie Collector
“A powerful story of international murder by contract…An explosive climax and an ingenious revelation are the perfect conclusions to this romantic thriller.”
“Director Stuart Cooper has assembled an excellent cast…Christopher Plummer and John Hurt brighten the proceedings.”
The Disappearance (1977), from director Stuart Cooper (Overlord), is a film maudit ripe for rediscovery, the tale of an ultra-cool hit man (Donald Sutherland) for an international assassination agency who must grapple with the disappearance of his beloved but wandering wife (Francine Racette) and with a new target who seems strangely connected to his vanished spouse. Featuring phenomenal performances by the likes of David Hemmings, John Hurt, Christopher Plummer, and David Warner, the film—available on this Twilight Time release both in a new cut and in director Cooper’s original version—spotlights the work of cinematographer John Alcott (A Clockwork Orange, The Shining), a Stanley Kubrick favorite.
