James Horner wrote the perfect music for this perfect movie. He captures both the rural American spirit and the spirit of baseball with his music. He collaborated with the great Billy May (big band arranger, often worked with Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra) to allow us to feel that warm sun on our backs as we watched the old Chicago Sox play. His music invites us to another time and another place so gently we can't help but be drawn in. It just picks you up and sweeps you along with him. If track 12, the Place Where Dreams Come True doesn't bring you to tears, nothing ever will. This score is pure magic.
Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella hears a voice in his corn field tell him, "If you build it, he will come." He interprets this message as an instruction to build a baseball field on his farm, upon which appear the ghosts of Shoeless Joe Jackson and the other seven Chicago White Sox players banned from the game for throwing the 1919 World Series. When the voices continue, Ray seeks out a reclusive author to help him understand the meaning of the messages and the purpose for his field. Stars Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones and Ray Liotta. 1989
