An anti-Semitic Polish colonel (Curt Jurgens) and a Jewish refugee (Danny Kaye) team up to seek passage out of France on the eve of the Nazis' strike. Along the way, life, love, and war bring the two men to a better understanding of each other. Based on Jacobowsky and the Colonel by Franz Werfel. "Me and the Colonel" was selected for a Royal Command Film Performance in London with Queen Elizabeth as the guest of honor. On several occasions the Queen named Danny Kaye as her favorite star.
