BEAT THE DEVIL (1953 / REGION A ONLY) (BLU-RAY)
Starring:  Humphrey Bogart, Peter Lorre, Robert Morley, Gina Lollobrigida, Jennifer Jones, Edward Underdown
Directed By:  John Huston
Composed By:  Franco Mannino

“The plot is an afterthought…The movie has above all effortless charm…we can relax and share the amusement of the actors, who are essentially being asked to share their playfulness.”
– Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

“The film careens from scene to scene with barely contained, wholly invigorating chaos. The disorder is made even more delectable by a game cast, each performer, without exception and regardless of celebrity status, embracing and in sync with the movie's shambolic energy.”
– Melissa Anderson, The Village Voice

A wildly eccentric collaboration between director John Huston, writer Truman Capote, and an astonishing cast of stars and character actors, Beat the Devil (1953) offers a sly send-up of caper films. In this one, everything goes amusingly wrong for its gallery of liars, thieves, and fantasists, including Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollobrigida, Robert Morley, Peter Lorre, and Edward Underdown. Even more amusingly, they hardly care, so enraptured are they with each other’s company and with the gorgeous Italian scenery, magnificently shot by the great Oswald Morris.

Absolutely reference quality picture - fine grained, sharp as a tack and free of flaws and artifacts. A genuine pleasure and revelation after the indifferent public domain versions available til now - highly recommended both as a film and a beautiful presentation.

A total revelation. How different this versions is from the one we have been seeing for years. In this film version, is a scene with Jennifer Jones, and her husband in the film. Seeing it, one can perhaps understand why it was cut. it certainly would not have played well in the South of the United States, and even I suppose in Great Britain, with its still empire though coming to an end. It really changes the feeling go f the film. Too bad that no one could think about getting the original version we have been seen gall these years on this disc, but it shouldn't be hard to find on other sources.

Watching it, I couldn't help but think of the Wages Of Fear, filmed about the same year, with this being the lighter in tone one, and even John Hustons many years later, Under The Volcano, which might appear strange to some people.

Also highly recommend the audio commentary, though I feel t some Melencoly as we hear the alter Nick Redman. the commentary gives a lot of interesting information, and perhaps a real insight into John Huston's work, and that he really was a true auteur.
