Don't Torture a Duckling
Director of some of the goriest films to have ever been made. Fans already know that the maestro had been directing films in many genres (including musicals, comedies, westerns and adventure films) before he found his voice as the King of Gore. One genre he excelled at in these early days was the giallo (an Italian film genre), and "Don't Torture A Duckling" is without a doubt one of the best in this genre.
Ortolani's score also deserves high marks, featuring some terrific
suspense sequences, and one of the prettiest themes he ever wrote, this side of "Cannibal Holocaust". It's been unavailable for a LONG time and this version includes some additional sequences not previously available on the OOP Lucertola disc.

Director Antonio Margheriti's remake of his own film LA DANZA MACABRA
(1964) reworks the well-worn "betcha can't survive the night in the haunted house" formula to great effect. This is one of the last truly Gothic horror thrillers to have come out of Italy and has many macabre inspirations worthy of a Mario Bava. Worth the time to check it out if only to catch Klaus Kinski (?!?) as Edgar Allan Poe. As is often the case, Ortolani departs from period authenticity and provides a tense, edgy score, full of fuzzed-out guitars, dripping percussion lines and oh yes. a sweet-tempered love theme and some delicious "Ballroom" sequences.
