Bob Barnes, played onscreen by George Clooney, has spent more than 20 years with the Central Intelligence Agency. While dealing with terrorists in the Middle East, he watched as U.S. support for himself and his colleagues dwindled. By the time authorities realize how dangerous the region had become, Barnes is left without the tools to combat anti-American forces, leading to a dangerous incident involving his friend Bryan Woodman (Matt Damon), a powerful oil executive; and Bryan's wife, Julie (Amanda Peet). "Syriana" was directed by the award-winning screenwriter Stephen Gaghan; the film was produced in part by Steven Soderbergh, who directed Gaghan's script for "Traffic." Robert Baer's real-life experiences as an American intelligence agent in the Middle East in the wake of the Cold War provided the basis for this political drama. 2005
