The civil war has been on for over two years. RIchard Gatlin, the inventor of the Gatlin machine-gun, offers his invention to the federal government. President Lincoln sends a secret commission to Las Cruces in New Mexico to meet the inventor. During the night two killers, entering the hotel where the Unionists are lodging, kill the three envoyès from Washington, carry off Gatlin and his gun and take them to their principal, an adventurer named Tarpas. The whole blame is laid on the Confederates and the betrayal by a member of the Unionist secret service. Suspicions immediately fall on Chris Tanner, who is immediately sentenced to death, despite a plea on his behalf made by Pinkerton, the chief of the secret service, who considers him to be innocent. To save Chris Tanner, he swithces him with another man who is imprisoned in his stead. Tanner leaves for Las Cruces, where he tries to discover what had really taken place and sets about finding Gatlin and his machine-gun...
