"Devotion" is a soap opera-style biopic of the Bronte sisters, the famed 19th century family of British novelists. Olivia de Havilland plays Charlotte Bronte, Ida Lupino is Emily Bronte, and Nancy Coleman shows up fitfully as Anne, the least-known sister. The rest of the Bronte clan is represented by Arthur Kennedy as troubled brother Bramwell. This is the sort of film in which we are offered a name-dropping "literary party" scene where each and every guest is a celebrated author. One of these celebrities is William Makepiece Thackery, who as played by Sidney Greenstreet becomes the Bronte girls' unofficial patron. Most of the plot footage centers on the unhappy romantic triangle between Emily, Charlotte, and the Reverend Nichols (Paul Henreid), a dilemma "solved" by Emily's impressionistic death scene. "Devotion" was filmed in 1943, but held back three years for release, due in part to a contractual squabble between Olivia De Havilland and Warner Bros. 1946
