GUNS FOR SAN SEBASTIAN / DARK OF THE SUN (CD)
Composed by: Ennio Morricone, Jacques Loussier

NEAT MINT - UNSEALED - ONLY ONE AVAILABLE - LIGHT SCUFF ON DISC

Ennio Morriocne's score for "Guns for San Sebastian" stands up to some of his best "Western" scores. "The Chase", underscoring the film's credit sequence, harkens to Morriocne's main titles to such films as "The Good The Bad and The Ugly" and "The Big Gundown" with it's driving rhythms and male chorus. The main love theme, appearing numerous times throughout the score, equals Morricone's main theme to "Once Upon a Time in the West" with it's lush strings and solo female voice. This score is a must for anyone who love's Morrionce's Western film music. The second half of this double bill is the score to "Dark of the Sun" written by French jazz composer Jacques Loussier.

GUNS FOR SAN SEBASTIAN - In this French/Italian co-production set in Mexico in 1746, Alastray (Anthony Quinn), a gunman on the run from the law, happens upon a Franciscan priest, Father Joseph (Sam Jaffe), while in flight. Father Joseph shows mercy on the fugitive and allows Alastray to stay with him, but when the locals find out that Joseph is harboring criminals, he's run out of town; Alastray travels with him, disguised as a monk. While approaching what appears to be a deserted village, Father Joseph is killed by a sniper, and Alastray heads into town. He is met by Teclo (Charles Bronson), a half-breed who calls the village home. It seems that a band of savage Yaqui Indians have been terrorizing the town and have a special hatred for men of faith; they intend to continue laying waste to the village until the residents beg for mercy and renounce Christianity. The Village leaders want to make Alastray their new spiritual leader, and despite his great reluctance, he agrees, mostly as a means of maintaining his cover. But when Alastray tries to organize the building of a much needed dam, as well as obtaining a stash of weapons so that the citizens may defend themselves, the Yaquis return in force, leading to a decisive confrontation. Guns for San Sebastian also features Anjanette Comer and Silvia Pinal. 1969

DARK OF THE SUN - Curry (Rod Taylor) is a veteran soldier-of-fortune hired by the president of the Congo for a three day mission. He and native Congoan Ruffo (Jim Brown) are to oversee the safe passage of a train through hostile enemy territory and bring back some uncut diamonds and a human cargo of fugitives loyal to the Congo cause. The two employ the drunken Doctor Wreid (Kenneth More) and a suspicious ex-Nazi named Henlein (Peter Carsten). The quartet, along with 40 of the Congo's best soldiers, try to maneuver the train against the rebel forces and save the beautiful missionary Claire (Yvette Mimieux) at no extra charge. The action takes place in the wake of the political unrest that swept the Congo in the 1950s. 1968
