John Avildsen’s 1981 film Neighbors may not be a comedy classic, but it sure has a story to tell.

It starred John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd and was Belushi’s final film, (he died mere months after filming was completed). Neighbors was originally scored, at Belushi’s urging, by Tom Scott, who was a founding member of the Blues Brothers Band and, prior to release, was rescored at lightning speed by longtime Avildsen friend Bill Conti.

Listening to both Scott’s and Conti’s scores back to back, which this CD allows as both are included, leaves one a little bewildered over how they could possibly be for the same film. Tom Scott’s efforts resulted in a skilled and stylish score – melodic and dark, in a wonderfully gothic sense. Conti’s score is absolutely wild and utterly madcap. Conti works overtime in an effort to actually make this comedy funny.

With the release of his at times hyperactive score for Neighbors, our Bill Conti festival continues and this time also allows us to rescue a wonderful score by Tim Scott that has been locked away for over 25 years. What a revelation!
